Ahh I'm so glad that you put this up on DA, I can finally go on and on about it without looking like a loser on Facebook
So, can I just take a moment to tell you how fabulous your values are in this??? They're just completely stunning! Even when I go through more than one 7B pencil in a drawing, I still can't achieve the level of contrast you've got in this. Even the "white" spots aren't just blank white spots, but they're still so bright! And her skin, her skin is so smooth looking! It's blended so perfectly, but it's not overdone or overworked. The eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair are *perfect* as well. They look so three-dimensional and real, it's stunning! Another thing that people don't tend to mention when they talk about portraiture is how you can accurately capture someone. It's one thing to get an accurate picture, but it means nothing if you haven't captured their aura of personality in it. You've done that perfectly in this piece. The pure innocence that she carries in her expression is just perfect, but you can also tell that there is more behind her eyes. I've seen this picture before, and I think that, for this B&W portrait, it was a good call to get rid of the polka dots on her gloves. With this shot, I think the dots would've been distracting so close to her face.
Okay gah I know I wrote like a page and a half about this but I just can't help it. Seeing your pieces makes me want to work even harder on mine, and they are just incredibly inspiring. Keep up the good work, and I hope you're having an amazing summer!
Kaitie, I don't think I could ever tell you enough times how AWESOME you are. Thankyou really and truly for such an insightful comment, it's really really wonderful to hear, especially cause it's from you!
Ahaha ^_^ I think some of your awesome-ness rubbed off on me, because I definitely wouldn't be who I am today without you! And it's no problem! I really like critiquing artworks for both the benefit of what I learn and see myself, and also for the artist. It makes me even happier that you take the time to read these things -- I often feel like I can get really annoying at times
I wish I could draw detailed sketches like that.
